Ramblers
Bethlehem, lying in the Towy Valley and overlooked by Garn Goch, is a fitting destination at this time of year as the Ramblers look forward to their Christmas festivities.
There are two Iron Age forts on Garn Coch, Y Gaer Fach (Small Fort) and Y Gaer Fawr (Large Fort).
On Saturday, 2 December they started their seven-mile walk from the foot of Gaer Fach crossing over the hillside to Y Gaer Fawr where the site of Carn Goch (Red Cairn) is situated and where wonderful views are to be had from its ridges.
It is so named because of the colour of the hillside, a prominent landmark seen from afar.
The Welsh Cistercian Way is a 650-mile long distance trail through Wales linking the historic Cistercian abbeys along ancient tracks, pilgrim roads and modern footpaths.
The trail passes through Lampeter from Whitland and on to Strata Florida.
In the next coming months, the Ramblers will be following lengths of the trial.
Their first venture on 25 November followed its route from Llanllyr, where a small community of Cistercian nuns lived, to Llangeitho.
It’s a relatively short and easy stretch of about six miles following small winding lanes and bridleways up the Aeron Valley on waymarked paths.
On Saturday, 11 November, they met at the Grannell Hotel in Llanwnnen to enjoy a short three-mile walk that included crossing the new pedestrian bridge across the River Grannell at its confluence with the Teifi.
A previous stone bridge was washed away many years ago and so once again locals and visitors can enjoy walking along the footpath from the village.
Following the walk they gathered for lunch at the Grannell and their annual general meeting.
Many thanks to the Grannell for their kind hospitality and providing the group with a welcome hot cup of tea on their arrival.
