St Padarn’s Church
LOCAL horologist, Tom Parry, has successfully completed the repair and renovation of the much-loved church clock, and it was started for St David’s Day. So whenever the church bells are rung, the bell ringers will once again have to isolate the clock hammer before the bells are rung and ensure that the hammer is back in place when ringing is completed; and every Thursday evening, practice nights will conclude with two of the bell ringers carefully rewinding the clock. The bell ringers’ AGM was held last Thursday 2 March, in the back room of the Black Lion, after practice. Bob McIntyre was elected tower captain with Vic Evans the deputy tower captain and secretary. Julie Gilbey continues as treasurer and Nick Taylor and Anthony Scarth are the steeple keepers. St Padarn’s, like many other churches in the St David’s Diocese, supports Plant Dewi, the children’s charity set up by the diocese which seeks to provide projects that nurture children, strengthen families and improve the quality of life for children, young people and their families across south-west Wales. A number of parishioners have collecting boxes in their homes where small coinage is dropped over the year, and with some other donations added, last year just under £350 was raised by St Padarn’s to support the work of the charity. The church now has an active Fundraising and Hospitality Committee. On Saturday, 18 March, members are holding a coffee morning to raise money for the church, in the church hall from 10.30am to noon. Homemade cakes and preserves will be on sale and there will be a range of other stalls. All are welcome. The March 2017 edition of the Parish magazine for the United Benefice of Llanbadarn Fawr, Capel Bangor, Elerch and Penrhyncoch, is now available on the table at the back of church. It updates on a range of topics, including information on the events being held next month to celebrate the 1,500th anniversary of the arrival of St Padarn in Ceredigion. Also with the magazine is a separate sheet from Darryl Walters, the organist and choirmaster, updating on choir news over the past month. Thursday evening choir practices are now not only concentrating on the choirs contribution to services in Lent and Easter, but preparing for the joint choral evensong with the choir of St Cadoc’s Church Caerleon on the afternoon of Saturday, 27 May. Next Sunday, 12 March, is the second Sunday in Lent, and services will be: 8am, Holy Communion using the 1984 Red Book setting; 10am, Cymun Bendigaid and 11.15am, Sung Eucharist. On Wednesday, 15 March and on each Wednesday morning throughout Lent, there will be a bilingual celebration of Holy Communion in the Lady Chapel at 10am. Everyone is welcome to attend the services.
