WI Meeting

EARLY April has been a busy time for Llanfair WI. Several members attended the Gwynedd-Meirionnydd Spring Council Meeting in Barmouth, which included the presentation of reports and interesting talks by guest speakers on Pennies for Friendship, Welsh Costume and the WI’s successful Public Affairs campaigns.

The monthly meeting was held a week early to avoid a clash with Good Friday. President Jan Spicer informed members that Mavis Gaskell, a former member, had passed away.

She then handed out cards to the April birthday ladies.Pat, Barbara and Sandra agreed to represent Llanfair at the Darts Singles Match.

Sandra handed out the preliminary schedule for the craft fair and asked members for an idea of numbers entering the various categories, to ensure that the scheme was viable. The Institute has bought packs of floral oasis for the outdoor trough, for use as needed. Angela Isles will also donate three blocks.

The newsletter was read, indicating items of specific interest. Members voted to continue our subscription to Clwb Cant for another year. Sue showed illustrated posters for the NFWI’s chosen resolutions, which will be voted upon at our May meeting. There is detailed information in WI Life.

A board was passed around to be signed by those wanting diaries, or planning to attend the EWM Fashion Show.

Anyone wishing to access the new NFWI website should ask Pat to forward their email address to Gwen, who will issue passwords.

Jan hopes to arrange a trip to Barmouth Lifeboat Station in June. The cost of the tour and talk, followed by tea at the Min-y-Mor, should be under £8.

The guest speaker, Mary Howell, then gave an illustrated presentation on “Santiago de Compostela”. She described the involvement of St James in Spain’s Christian history, leading to his becoming Spain’s patron saint.

With maps and photographs, Mary described the “Camino”, the various pilgrimage routes across Northern Spain and via the centre of the country, leading to the Basilica of St James in Santiago. The Camino is walked by people from all over the world, for their own personal reasons.

Mary’s own trips were the inspiration for her fictional novel “Murielle’s Angel”, based on the true locations.

After answering many questions, Mary was warmly thanked for her excellent, informative talk.

Competition winners: 1, Christine; 2, Pauline; 3, Angela. Raffle: Stella.

Next meeting will be on 12 May, The Resolutions and Hospice at Home.
