WI

IN the meeting on 12 January, president Pauline Bedson welcomed members.

Having already discussed the resolutions for 2018 in December, they were read in outline and votes were counted for sending to County.

Regarding the NWFI Photographic Competition, “A Year in your WI”, all members are welcome to take photographs at monthly meetings or events attended or organised throughout 2018.

The final choices of 12 images will be decided later in the year.

Full details appear on ‘My WI’.

They hope this will be an enjoyable venture for those wishing to be involved.

Pauline can provide instructions for accessing ‘My WI’, and also for the dates of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor computer classes for anyone interested.

Reminders for tea hostess and memorial flower duties were read for the benefit of new members; the instructions will be updated for relevance to this small Institute.

Regarding correspondence, £35 was sent to “Pennies for Friendship”.

Sue had received a notelet from Angela Isles, thanking the Committee for the Christmas Party.

There was no County Newsletter issued in December.

Pat read the treasurer’s report and also apologised for the lack of the programme, which is unavoidable because of the absence of the programme secretary.

A draft programme is currently being checked ready for February.

Pauline introduced our afternoon’s speaker, Katharine Dobson, a Water Aid volunteer, to speak about the work of this international organisation.

Katharine has first-hand experience of life without running water from her time spent in Africa.

She spoke about the consequences of living in such deprived and unhygienic conditions, such as early infant mortality and the poor quality of life for girls and women, whose days were spent walking miles to collect water, usually contaminated.

When projects bring water to local communities, mortality and health problems decrease, girls have the opportunity to enter schools and women have time to work productively, such as crop-growing.

After many questions, Sue gave a sincere vote of thanks to Katherine for enlightening us about how the provision of clean water liberates communities, especially females.

Katharine joined members for tea, while members had the chance to study Water Aid booklets.

Competition winners: 1st Pauline, 2nd Sue. Raffle winner: Christine.

Next meeting: Friday, 9 February, at 2pm: ‘Planting by the Moon’ by Mary and Dennis Post.

Competition: A limerick beginning “There was an old man in the moon . . .”
