Rohingya refugees
MONTGOMERY GP Alan Woodall recently gave an illustrated talk to a meeting organised by Llanidloes Refugee Support Group of his experiences working in a camp for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
The Rohingya people who have fled from horrific violence and persecution in Myanmar (formerly Burma) to Bangladesh and are now housed in a camp of more than a million people, the largest refugee settlement in the world, with no proper schools or medical facilities.
Alan regularly spends his annual leave giving medical help and training refugee helpers to give assistance. With limited supplies and equipment Alan said: “What I can do is a mere drop in the ocean, and probably the most valuable thing is to come back home and tell people about what is going on.”
Alan also recently spoke to children at Llanidloes Primary School who raised money for the project.
The talk was very well received on Tuesday, 4 June, at St Idloes Church Hall with a number of people staying behind to ask questions and discuss the issue.
Generous donations from the evening have enabled Llanidloes Refugee Support Group to send £350 to Medicin Sans Frontieres for their work with the Rohingya.
Guide dog walk
THE walk, in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind, which was cancelled due to storm Hannah in April has now been rescheduled for Saturday, 10 August, starting and finishing in Kennel Fields at 10am.
Entry is just £5 per dog or free entry if your dog is sponsored for more than £5 by friends and family. Your dog will need to be on a lead as the 6km route is on public roads and footpaths passing sheep.
A route map will be supplied and your dog will get a rosette and some dog treats when you finish the walk.
Sponsor forms are available from Woosnam and Davies, Llanidloes, Llanidloes Rotary Club and other locations. If you were sponsored for the last walk, please hang onto your sponsorship form and money and bring it with you on the day.
Please bring the sponsor form with you so we can see how much you have raised and help President of the Rotary Club of Llanidloes John Selwyn Smith reach his target of £10,000 to train a Guide Dog Puppy.

Community centre
HAVE you enjoyed attending recent events at Llanidloes Community Centre, or are your children benefitting from one of the clubs or activities hosted there? If so the centre needs you!
Tim Morgan, chairman of the board of directors, said: “The average age of our directors is 64 and several are over 70. If it is to stay open, we need more involvement from younger people and particularly the parents of children using the Centre. So we are appealing for those people who use it to get more involved in running it.”
Work is due to commence this summer on repairing the flat roof at the front of the building and a major contract to replace the main roof is planned for next year.
Tim said: “We have been able to host some great events in the last year such as the Roller Disco, as well as annual events such as the Christmas Fair and the Food Festival. We have the Treorchy Male Voice Choir booked for October. Weekly activities such as the Gym Club and Brownies/Guides continue to provide activities for young people. Just a small commitment by more people could make all the difference and ensure the Centre continues to provide a focus for community activities in the future.”
