Rotary club

Llanidloes Rotary Club hosted a thank-you evening in recognition of local volunteers who support the club throughout the year.

Many of the events undertaken by the club require extra support to ensure they run successfully, such as the Wales Rally GB where volunteers deploy for hours on end, marshalling the spectators through the night and day come wind, rain or shine.

Other ventures, such as Bonfire night, need Rotarian wives and friends to assist the club to help make the night a safe and enjoyable event for the community. Support comes from many people in too many ways to mention, and thus the club hosts this annual night as a sign of appreciation.

The guests were treated to a carvery meal followed by an extremely entertaining performance from the “Radnor Twurzels”.

During the evening three Paul Harris Awards were presented. The Paul Harris Fellow was established in 1957 to show appreciation and acknowledge individuals who contribute their time and efforts in the service of others.

Many other notable figures have been named as Paul Harris Fellows, including US President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, US astronaut James Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Jonas Salk. Both John Sheppard and Tim Chilton were presented their awards by President John Cradduck.

The third presentation was to Brenda Griffiths acknowledging the commitment to Rotary by her late husband John Griffiths, who sadly passed away suddenly before Christmas.
