Powys Eisteddfod
A PROCLAMATION ceremony for the Powys Eisteddfod took place in Llanidloes.
On Saturday, 23 September, a procession of Gorsedd members, representatives from local community councils, county council and clubs, societies and the public proceeded from the community centre at 2.30pm before the ceremony took place at the community centre.
At 6pm, a Bilingual Cymanfa Ganu (Singing Festival), organised by the Eisteddfod Committee, Llanidloes Cytûn and the local Welsh Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Wales, was held at China Street Chapel to celebrate the Tricentenary of the Welsh hymn writer, William Williams, Pantycelyn’s birth. The conductor was Linda Gittins and the organist was Bryn Davies.
The Bro Hafren Powys Eisteddfod is to be held in Hafren, Newtown, on 20 and 21 July.
Gardening club
LLANIDLOES and District Gardening Club held its AGM at the Trewythen Arms Hotel on Tuesday, 26 September.
The following officers were elected for 2017/18: chairperson, Dalis Davies; vice-chairperson, Trish Kneale; treasurer, Charles Gratrix; and secretary, Barbara Jones.
The following officers were elected to the show committee for 2017/18: chairperson, Llew Powell; treasurer, Charles Gratrix; secretary, Linda Jones; sub-committee, Trish Kneale, Jane Griffiths and Linda Hallett.
Lesley Manship and Trish Kneale will be raffle persons and Ruth Davies will be responsible for the prize from club funds. Trish will arrange the club’s annual outing.
The next meeting will take place at the Elephant Inn at 7.30pm on 24 October with a guest speaker.
Rotary Club
THE club would like to the thank the community for their overwhelming generosity in response to the recent hurricanes.
After Hurricane Irma, the club immediately sent a donation to ShelterBox.
Each box costs over £500 and contains all the essential equipment to house a family in temporary shelter.
Within days of the club’s donation, Hurricane Maria developed. The club carried out a collection and set up donation points and as a result a further ShelterBox was funded.
Donation points are still active at Woosnam & Davies, Llani Leisure and Welsh Computers.
Arwystli Society
ON 20 September members met to visit The Clochfaen, Llangurig.
Owners James and Kevin explained how the property had undergone detailed building in 1914 to the designs of W A S Benson Architect. The property has been further restored with sensitivity and flair by the owners with an impressive display of prints, paintings, textiles and furniture.
Following a delightful tea, members were guided to the library where James gave a full talk on the history of the Verny family.
Secretary Christina Edwardes thanked James and Kevin for a truly enjoyable event.
The next meeting will be held at St Idloes Church Hall on 18 October at 7.30pm on memory photographs with Mr Pugh.
Harvest festival
THERE is a welcome extended to all at Oakley Park Chapel for the festival on Thursday, 5 October, at 7pm. The guest preacher is Rev Robert Thomas of Llandrindod Wells.
On Sunday, 8 October, there is a children’s harvest festival at 2pm.
Barn dance
THERE will be a barn dance on 6 October at Broneirion, Llandinam, from 7pm to noon, with a DJ and entertainment from the Twerzels.
Entrance fee of £15 also includes a hog roast.
Pay on the door or buy tickets from Hester Brebner at the outpatients office at Llanidloes Hospital. All money raised goes towards the new Palliative Care Unit.
