AT the beginning of December, vice-president Hazel Rimmer welcomed Owen Edwards, an ‘A’ level student, who told us of a two-week visit he made to China last July with Penglais school, to study language and culture at Beijing University.

He was struck by the contrast between the mountainous scenery and the metropolis of Beijing, and admitted to finding the visit quite a culture shock.

Each morning, they received four hours of language tuition, before visiting notable landmarks, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the 2008 Olympic Arena. We saw some of his mementos, including chopsticks, a miniature carving of Confucius and a little book of Quotations of Mao-tsetung. Jane Askey gave the vote of thanks. The raffle was won by Janet Parry.

For our Christmas dinner, members headed for Coleg Ceredigion in Llanbadarn, where we enjoyed a delicious meal prepared and served by the students. The prize for a light-hearted competition was won by Carol Evans and Betty Wakelin.
