THE February meetings began with a talk by Charlotte Leonard of Mid Wales Fire and Rescue Services. She gave advice about how to minimise fire risk in the home and gave tips on the most suitable fire alarms available to meet individual members’ needs. She was thanked by Cynthia Wainwright. The following week they welcomed Aberystwyth photographer Keith Morris. Over the years, he has compiled an ongoing photographic record of the social and economic history of Aberystwyth, showing how much change has occurred, as buildings closed or were demolished and replaced with others. Maurine Edwards thanked him for his talk. The competition for a photo of Aberystwyth was won by Eirlys Jones, Hazel Rimmer came second and Margaret Peel came third.‘Living With Dementia’ was the subject of speaker Sally Corlett, a ‘Dementia Champion.’ She spoke of a national campaign which encourages the general public to be more dementia friendly, and to turn understanding into action. She outlined various types of the disease, and stressed the importance of helping the patient to feel good, by listening, encouraging rather than arguing and not being too protective or demanding. Although the condition cannot be cured, the patient can sometimes use coping strategies to maintain a reasonable quality of life. She was thanked by Judy Lile. The competition for a warming recipe to keep out the cold was won by Hazel Rimmer, Eirlys Jones came second and Judy Lile came third.

Next, Rev Carwyn Arthur, methodist minister in Tregaron spoke about Patagonia. He told how the early Welsh settlers landed at Porth Madryn on 28 July. 1865, initially finding shelter in caves along the shore as it was winter time, before settling further inland in an Argentinian province, the Chubut, named after a river which flows down from the Andes. He was thanked by Margaret Rees.
