ON 1 October, Steven Williams, a member of the UK Parliament’s outreach and engagement team, came to talk to the society about the everyday work of Members of Parliament.
He also talked about the role of women, in particular the Suffragettes.
Their protests, both peaceful and sometimes violent, helped in the push towards women being granted the right to vote and to be elected as MPs.
Today there are 208 female MPs, but this is only 32 per cent of the total. The speaker made the subject into a most enjoyable and lively evening which involved a quiz and some short films of Parliament at work.
The next meeting will take place in the Reading Room, Llanon, on Monday, 5 November at 7.30pm, when Richard Ireland will be giving a talk on Wooden Horses and Dead Vermin.
