Trilogy

THE final instalment of a trilogy which tells the tantalising story of the final years of Glynd?r’s rebellion has been published.

Glynd?r: Dragon Breathes Fire by the late Moelwyn Jones is an imaginary novel based on the real life battles of Owain Glynd?r, and follows Glynd?r: Son of Prophecy published in 2016 and Glynd?r: To Arms! published in 2017.

Moelwyn Jones started his career as a Welsh and History teacher, and was particularly interested in the life of his hero Owain Glynd?r, which he researched thoroughly for the trilogy.

Sadly, Moelwyn passed away before the publication of the series.

His widow Delyth has ensured that the trilogy was published and has kept to the wishes of her late husband.

The third instalment was published in time for the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

“It would have meant a lot to Moelwyn that the final book is out for the Eisteddfod – I’m very pleased,” said Delyth.

Glynd?r: Dragon Breathes Fire sees Wales united under one flag - with a Senedd in Machynlleth and the long-held dream of a nation almost a reality.

Strengthened by the support of the French king and an alliance with the English forces of Henry Hotspur (Sir Henry Percy), Owain Glynd?r can legitimately claim the title of Prince of Wales.

However, fate intervenes and his rebellion which sees the prophecy of a saviour who would one day free Wales is fulfilled, albeit all too briefly.

Glynd?r: Son of Prophecy was selected as Book of the Month by the Welsh Books Council in November 2016 and both novels have received high praise and acclaim for their portrayal of the life of Wales’ revolutionary hero Owain Glynd?r.

Glynd?r: Dragon Breathes Fire by Moelwyn Jones (£8.99, Y Lolfa) is available now.

Plastic bags

THE official launch of a Machynlleth scheme to cut the use of plastic carrier bags will take place on Saturday, 1 September, with local shops receiving locally made cloth bags.

The Benthyg Bag Borrow a Bag project has seen local volunteers making special bags that will be distributed to participating shops across the town that will enable people who haven’t brought their own bags to borrow one of the bags before returning it.

Volunteers have been working since the end of April and have made hundreds of bags which will be distributed for the official launch.

Jane Rigby, one of the organisers of the scheme, said: “Hundreds of bags have been made and Liz Lavelle has made a large banner which we have been given permission to put up at the Clock Tower to advertise our launch day.

“The launch will take place on Saturday, 1 September when all the bags will be delivered to local shops.

“A specially designed poster will be given to participating shops to advertise that they are in the Benthyg Bag Borrow A Bag scheme.”

A host of shops have signed up to take part in the scheme.
