Garden club
AN enjoyable meeting of the Machynlleth and District Garden Club took place at the bowling club last month, when the chairman of the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust, Simon Baynes, spoke about the work of the trust in Montgomeryshire and across Wales.
Simon said that WHGT is thriving across Wales with 10 branches and membership rising at five per cent per year.
Next year is the 30th anniversary of the trust and this will provide an opportunity to celebrate WHGT’s work in protecting the heritage of parks and gardens across Wales.
Brian Hopewell, activities secretary of the club, said: “Everyone seemed to enjoy the talk and it created a lot of interest.
“It was very good to see former WHGT trustee and local resident Joy Neal with Simon at the talk.
“Thank you also for the souvenir photograph.”
Simon said: “Thank you to the members of Machynlleth and District Garden Club for such a friendly welcome and for three people kindly joining as new WHGT members.
“I was very impressed by the size and breadth of activities of the club and wish it every continued success in the future.”
Royal British Legion
PRESIDENT Ivor Price thanked chairman Stephen Doyle and his wife Iris for preparing the branch for this year’s appeal and members who sold poppies.
Stephen thanked everybody who helped, including Roger Seagrave for becoming branch standard bearer.
Secretary Anthony Jones and assistant secretary Sylvia Whittaker were also singled out for praise.
Anthony also praised Sylvia for standing in for him on the occasions he was unable to be present.
The new committee election went as follows: president, Ivor Price; vice-presidents, Kath Holt, and Eufyl Williams; chairman, Stephen Doyle; secretary, Anthony Jones; treasurer, Iris Doyle; Poppy Appeal organiser, Stephen Doyle; welfare officer, Stephen Doyle; sick visitor, Elsbeth McAuley; standard bearer, Roger Seagrave.
New chairman Stephen remains as chairman for one year.
Bob Dunn requested a letter of thanks be sent to Mark Hodge for doing the poppy cards on the lamp-posts in the town.
Ann Humphreys thanked the chairman for the poppies for Cartef Dyfi and the hospital. Also, Ann gave a donation of £30 to the branch.
Bob pointed out that the remembrance ceremony at the war memorial was non-denominational. The meeting ended at 3.30pm with the Kohima Epitaph.
Woodland heritage
AT Y Plas on 12 December, from 11am to 3pm, there will be a chance to share your woodland story, in Welsh or English, learn about a new project and what’s been discovered so far.
Dominoes
JOINT leaders Foresters B edged a 7-6 victory at home to Red Lion while, joining Foresters B at the top of the Dyfi Valley Dominoes League after week five’s round of fixtures, Bowling Club claimed an 8-5 home success over Skinners B.
Elsewhere, Wynnstay Llan won 8-5 at Skinners A and Dovey beat visitors Foresters A by seven rubbers to six.

Hear to Help
THE Hear to Help drop-in clinic takes place this Friday, 7 December, at the Care Centre, Forge Road, from 10am to noon.
Civic society
CHAIR Margaret Vince welcomed members of the Machynlleth and District Civic Society’s executive committee to the Tabernacle for their bi-monthly meeting on Thursday, 15 November.
The chair called on secretary Rab Jones, who reported on progress to assist a lady who is researching the graves of Canadian soldiers of the First World War who are buried in the UK.
These include Thomas Owen Davies, who is buried in the church cemetery at Penegoes.
His name is listed on the Machynlleth War Memorial but, prior to the research, was not recorded on the website of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
He also reported that research was ongoing into the history of the Edward Morgan Scholarship Fund.
The committee reaffirmed its support for Canolfan Owain Glynd?r and would be supportive of initiatives to further strengthen its importance in the heritage and history of Wales.
The next meeting will be on Thursday, 17 January.
Bowls AGM
MEMBERS are invited to the annual general meeting of Machynlleth Bowling Club at the clubhouse on Thursday, 13 December.
The meeting, which will start at 7pm, will include the election of officers and committee.
