Everyone is most welcome to go along to Clwb Coginio’s free cooking sessions and enjoy some delicious meals.

Etifeddiaeth Dyffryn Dyfi Heritage Society

THE Heritage Society’s members will welcome guest speaker Barbara Walker to the next meeting in the Tabernacle Auditorium on Wednesday, 6 February.

Starting at noon, Barbara will give a talk on ‘Unlocking a Victorian Photograph Album’.

Civic Society

IN the unavoidable absence of chair Margaret Vince, Jim Goodbody took the chair at a meeting of Machynlleth and District Civic Society’s executive committee, which was held at the Tabernacle on Thursday, 17 January.

Secretary Rab Jones explained the business for the evening and passed the agenda to the acting chair.

He advised that, as yet, no start dates have been published for two major schemes, namely, the new Dyfi Bridge project and the proposed refurbishment at the Machynlleth Community Hospital. He also gave a final update on his meeting with Diana Baupre regarding the grave of Thomas Owen Davies who served with the Canadian forces during the First World War and is buried in Penegoes Churchyard.

Committee member David Holt gave a most interesting update on how matters have transpired since the letting of the new Wales and Borders franchise in October of last year.

It was noted that, as of this meeting, the planning application for development on the former Cardiganshire Farmers site was yet to be considered.

Similarly, no decision has been made regarding proposed redevelopment of the former Travis Perkins site.

The committee considered plans for the new Ysgol Bro Hyddgen School.

It was agreed to support this exciting project, which would bring great benefit to a wide area.

It was agreed that, following discussion, a letter should be sent to the county council’s housing department to request information as regards the present position with garages owned by the county council.

The date for the next bi-monthly meeting of the committee was set as Thursday, 21 March at 7pm.

Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens

MACHYNLLETH’S county councillor, Michael Williams, is urging people to donate a tree as the community group Gerddi Bro Dyfi Gardens prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens will celebrate its anniversary with a day of celebrations on Saturday, 23 February.

Part of the celebrations includes planting a new community orchard and gardens with edible wildlife hedge.

Cllr Williams has donated a tree to the orchard and is urging people to get involved.

He said: “I know that the group’s wonderful volunteers are delighted that the public have shown their support.¬

“The community orchard will be a great resource to promote healthy eating, particularly for our young people. I urge everyone to get involved.”

Volunteer co-ordinator Angela Paxton said: “Many have already donated to the community orchard fund to buy new fruit and nut trees, as well as tree guards, ties and compost.

“Volunteers have chosen trees for the orchard, which will be planted around the edge of the wildflower meadow, in the mini orchard, and the apothecary garden.

“There will be apple, damson, pear, plum, mulberry, fig and walnut trees.

“Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens has also been granted a new wild edible hedge from the Woodland Trust.

“We are so grateful to all those who have donated to the new community orchard, which will improve the gardens for the benefit of all.”
