Birthday
CELEBRATING their 10th birthday, members of Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens are sending a warm welcome for all to join them to hear the history of the gardens as horticulturalist Alys Fowler discusses edible gardening at Y Plas on Saturday, 23 February, from 1pm to 3pm. There will also be tea, cake and book signing. The celebrations continue with a gig at the Corris Institute in the evening, 8am to midnight with Lady P and the Surfragettes.
Midday talk
THE next, always well-received, mid-day market day talk will be given by the artist Barry Davies about his work. The talk, which is in the Tabernacle, Heol Pen’rallt, is free and starts at noon.
Council meeting
MACHYNLLETH Town Council is holding its next ordinary monthly meeting at Y Plas on Monday, 25 February, at 6.30pm. Formal notice of the meeting will be posted on the council’s notice boards in front of the town library and the Plas foyer. The public and press are welcome to attend.
Mid Wales Refugee Action
ON Friday, 22 February, Pantperthog Village Hall, near Machynlleth, will be the hosts as Mid Wales Refugee Action introduces and presents the film Human Flow. More than 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war, the greatest displacement since World War 2. Film maker Ai Weiwei examines the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal impact. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Tickets cost £7. International pool
TWO Members of Machynlleth Pool League have qualified to represent their country in 2019. Gareth ‘Fuzz’ Jones and Mark Gaskell, both of who play for the rugby club, will play for Wales in the European Pool Championship at Bridlington in May and in the Nations’ Cup in Cyprus in November. Mark finished third in the Seniors section of the North Wales Tour, while Gareth was fourth in the Masters’ section.
Climate change
THERE was standing room only this week at an open meeting to discuss how to respond to the ‘Climate Emergency’ declared by Machynlleth Town Council. Just before Christmas Machynlleth became the first council in Wales to make such a move. It has since been followed by Aberystwyth and Tywyn town councils, and has also inspired Powys County Council to act.
St David’s Folk Festival
HELD jointly at the Wynnstay Hotel and Owain Glynd?r Centre, the festival takes place between 1 and 3 March. Ticket and format information available from both venues.
