World Day of Prayer
THE World Day of Prayer Service was held at St Mair Catholic Church on Friday, 1 March.
The service was written by the Christian Women of Slovenia and the theme was ‘Come - Everything is ready’. The leader in Welsh and English was Ceri Morgan. The organist was Margaret Hughes. The collection raised £169.10 which will go towards World Day of Prayer grants to many charities.
The collector was Annie Tack. All denominations were represented: St Peter’s Church, Rev Canon Kathleen, Margaret Searson, Jeanne Kerridge; Maengwyn, Ceinwen Lloyd, Gwenan Jones, Jane Lloyd, Delyth Rees, Dorothy Pugh; Quakers, Liz Brown; St Mair, Ceri Morgan, Wendy Morgan, Mari Jones, Jill Nicholls, Annie Tack.
Free training
MACHYNLLETH library is offering free training for anyone interested in becoming a volunteeread to enable an older person living with mild to moderate dementia or disability to enjoy shared reading experience, in their own home or as part of a small group.
The training is on Thursday 11 April 10.30am to 2pm. To book a place contact Trish - patricia. [email protected], or speak to staff in the library.
Civic Society
IN the unavoidable absence of chair Margaret Vince, Jim Goodband was appointed chair for the meeting and welcomed all to the Tabernacle for a meeting of the Machynlleth and District Civic Society’s bimonthly executive committee on Thursday, 21 March.
Secretary/treasurer Rab Jones drew members’ attention to matters arising from the January meeting, including no further news regarding the proposed new Dyfi Bridge project; planning permission has been granted for the refurbishment/ new build of the community hospital; some sets of trains now have the Transport for Wales’ new livery; there is likely to be an update as regards refurbishment or demolition of certain council garages at the next meeting; and the acting chair said that general maintenance work at Canolfan Owain Glynd?r was ongoing.
The secretary/treasurer gave an update on the society’s healthy accounts and on the new mandate form with the society’s bank, which was progressing.
It was understood that a planning application for residential development on the former Travis Perkins site on Heol y Doll has been submitted.
A decision on the application for residential development on the former Cardiganshire Farmers’ site on Heol Maengwyn was awaited.
It was noted with concern that the company, Dawnus, involved with the proposed new all-through school, Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, has gone into administration.
Regarding the Powys Teaching Health Board consultation on the Dyfi Valley Health practice’s preferred option to close the Glantwymyn Health Centre, members noted that the secretary/treasurer has written to the board to express its strong support for robust GP services for Machynlleth and the wider Dyfi Valley.
Members expressed their continued support for the Dyfi Valley Health practice.
Members scheduled the executive’s next meeting for Thursday, 16 May, at 7pm at the Tabernacle.

THE Hear to Help drop-in clinic in Machynlleth takes place this Friday, 5 April, from 10am to noon in Y Plas.
NHS hearing-aid wearers can visit this Action on Hearing Loss Cymru service for friendly help with cleaning their aids, new tubes and free batteries.
Council tribute
THE mayor, Cllr Richie Gaskell, opened Machynlleth Town Council’s meeting on Monday, 25 March, in very sombre tone as he informed fellow councillors of the untimely death of former councillor and mayor (2014/15) David (Dai) Speake, after a short illness. He extended condolences to Dai’s family and friends and led members in silent tribute as they reflected on the life of a much loved and dedicated townsperson, who gave freely of his time to help others.
