Lantern parade
THE annual parade will take place from 6.30pm on Friday, 1 November.
There will be a prizegiving and disco in The Plas after the firework display and lantern parade through the town.
Lantern-making workshops will be taking place throughout October half term at the Owain Glynd?r Institute on Monday, 28 October; the bowling club on Tuesday, 29 October; RSPB Nature Reserve on Wednesday, 30 October and Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, secondary campus on Thursday, 31 October.
A trophy will be presented by the mayoress to the maker of the best lantern.
Rail AGM
A WELL-ATTENDED annual general meeting of the Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth Rail Passengers’ Association (SARPA) took place on Saturday, 5 October, as members gathered at the White Lion Hotel.
Chair Jeff Smith gave a summary of the last 12 months.
He confirmed that SARPA would continue to press for improvements with a full hourly service, more carriages, less cancellations, more space for luggage and bikes amongst the group’s aspirations.
The treasurer/membership secretary, Bill Redfern, presented the annual account and said accounts were approved. He confirmed that membership had increased by about 10 per cent.
It was agreed that membership fees, due on January 1 2020, would remain at £10 for individuals and organisations.
Officers and committee were re-elected en bloc for 2019/20: chair, Jeff Smith (Aberystwyth); vice-chair, Ivor Morris (Welshpool); treasurer/membership secretary, Bill Redfern (Tywyn); secretary, Sarah Harvey (Pool Quay); webmaster, Angus Eickhoff (Machynlleth); newsletter editor, Denis Bates (Aberystwyth); and distribution officer, Robert Knight (Machynlleth).
Elected as committee members were: Roger Goodhew (Shrewsbury) and Tony Harvey (Welshpool).
County Councillor Michael Williams represents both Powys County Council and Machynlleth Town Council on the group.
Sesiwn werin/folk nights
TRADITIONAL folk music sessions will take place at The Slaters Arms, Corris.
All musicians welcome; just come along and play.
A friendly, open and relaxed session, all tunes including Welsh, Irish, English, Scottish, Breton and Bluegrass are permitted and encouraged.
Regular sessions are held on the first and third Tuesday of the Month.
Pennal Tuesday Club
MAT Mitchell was the guest speaker at Pennal’s Tuesday Club on 8 October, talking about the local project, Coetir Anian/Cambrian Wildwood.
The club’s Christmas lunch is booked at Y Garth for Tuesday, 10 December at 12.30pm when the meal will be subsidised by the club for each member. Menus for the lunch were distributed at the meeting.
The guest speaker for the November gathering will be Nicola Ruck.

Coffee morning success
MACHYNLLETH and District Branch of North West Cancer Research held their annual coffee morning at the rugby club on Saturday, 5 October, raising over £1,500.
Thanks to the dedication of committee members, friends and public support, with donations still coming in, the total is fast approaching last year’s best ever £1,609.
Council meeting
MACHYNLLETH Town Council will be holding its next ordinary monthly meeting at Plas Machynlleth on Monday, 28 October, at 6.30pm.
Formal notice of the meeting will be affixed to the council’s notice boards in front of the town library and the Plas foyer. Public and press are welcome to attend.
Pool Stars
WITH only one round of fixtures remaining in the North Wales Pool Interleague, Machynlleth’s two teams in the league’s second division, Marvels and Môr-ladron, have five players sitting proudly in the top twenty of 104 listed players.
The highest ranked player, with 27 wins from 40 frames, is Môrladron’s Phil Hay in third place and in 20th slot is Gwynfor Williams with 18 wins from 43 frames.
Marvels’ players Arwel Owen (4th) has 27 wins from 44 frames, Luke Williams (9th) has 21 wins from 33 and, with 18 wins from 35, is Kenyon Hall in 18th place.
Bro Ddyfi Hallowe’en party
BRO Ddyfi Leisure Centre is pleased to announce that it is holding a spectacular Hallowe’en party on Thursday, 31 October, from 2pm until 4pm.
£4.50 per child. Age 11 and under. Party games, fancy dress competition, terror toddlers’ time and more!
Children under eight years of age require an adult to remain on the premises.
All proceeds towards gym stars and toddler time.
Royal British Legion
THE Machynlleth & District Branch of the British Legion will be holding their annual general meeting at the bowling club on 5 November at 2pm.
Could everyone buying wreaths pick them up and pay for them from the Vape shop, opposite Spar, from Friday, 25 October to Saturday, 9 November between 9am and 6pm.
Book club
ON Friday, 1 November, the club will be discussing Normal People by Sally Rooney.
Go along to the Green Room at 2pm for a session of a reflection of life through literature.
