Frostbite Dinghy Racing

THE final event in New Quay Yacht Club’s winter Frostbite Dinghy Racing series went ahead in glorious sunshine with a fair easterly breeze.

There were wind shifts during the racing so the course was changed several times which challenged organisers and sailors alike.

Four races were sailed bringing the total for the series to eight, only four short of the planned 12.

Of the four races on Sunday, Hannah Schafer/ Jennifer Davies, Laser 2000, won three with one 2nd place; Tim Jeremy, Weta 4-4,won one race and two 3rds ; Heather Summers, Pico, had a 2nd and Emlyn Owen, Laser Radial a third.

The Frostbite Series 2019 winners were Hannah Schafer/Jennifer Davies in Delilah, Laser 2000.

Walkers

FIFTEEN walkers accompanied by three dogs met in the central car park in St Dogmaels on Saturday, 23 March for a five-mile circular walk on an overcast but mild and dry day.

The first section took the group along the riverside with its historic connections. The method of seine netting of salmon and sewin introduced by the Dominican monks in the 12th century and still used today was discussed and the posts observed where the huge nets are hung to dry.

Further on the Pulpit Stone came into view where the ancient practice of blessing the fishing boats and their crews at the start of the season has been revived in recent years.

The route then moved inland, passing Albro Castle, a large stone building which in the nineteenth century housed the workhouse poor. After crossing some fields, walking up a lane and along footpaths through Bryncws the walkers reached the furthest point where lunch was taken.

Then it was downhill to reach the Cwm Dewel trail back to the village, pausing on the way to see the eco house and a superb view down to the abbey ruins.

All in all, a pleasant and interesting day.

The next walk, on Saturday, 13 April, will be in the Cwmtydu and Pontrhydarfothau area. Led by Viv Evans, it will include an appreciation of migrating birds in the surrounding woodlands and start from the front at Cwmtydu at 10.30am. Details from Glyn on 01545 561285.
