THE latest community news from New Quay.

Society

THE highly enthusiastic November meeting heard Brian Ottewell, former head of design at the department of nuclear physics (now particle physics) at Oxford University, give an illustrated talk on the ATLAS Project (the Large Hadron Collider).

Brian’s talent as a photographer further enhanced his description of the journey undertaken between Didcot and CERN in Geneva in order to deliver the extremely sensitive particle accelerator, developed and constructed in Oxfordshire.

In December, the society’s Christmas lunch was much enjoyed by many members.

The next meeting will be on Monday, 16 January, at 2pm in the Bowls Clubhouse, Francis Street. Julian Evans will demonstrate the use of the defibrillator (there are three in New Quay and several others in the area).

This will be also be a practical session and we hope that everyone who wishes to, will have a chance to practise with the dummies which will be available. The session will be followed by refreshments and a business meeting.

New Year’s Day Swim

NEW Quay Cancer Research UK fundraising committee would like to thank all 60 plus swimmers for their courage in taking the traditional New Year’s Day plunge this year in foul weather and raising a fantastic £623.

They would also like to thank all those who helped collect this wonderful sum and all who donated on the beach and in cafes around the town.

Walkers

THE New Quay Walkers met for their walk on 10 December at the National Trust car park in Mwnt for a six mile circular coast and countryside ramble.

The weather forecast was foul but 12 brave members with four dogs walked. The weather turned out to be mild, overcast and murky in the morning but the forecast more persistent rain arrived during the afternoon.

The morning session was a coastal walk towards Gwbert with views of Cardigan Island and back towards Mwnt, Wild Shetland ponies were seen half way along the coastal path and the route went past two disused slate quarries which must have been a hive of activity during their day and provided valuable but highly dangerous work.

After lunch, the walkers continued to Ferwig and on past Pen-feidr, Ty’r Yet and Nantycroy farms back to Mwnt before enjoying refreshments at Gogerddan Arms on the way back to New Quay.
