THE latest community news from New Quay

Camera Club

THE AGM was the main feature of New Quay Camera Club’s Thursday meeting, at which many of the present committee members were persuaded to retain their posts, and were happy to do so.

In addition, talented member Arnold Phipps-Jones, joined the committee as competition officer.

With the official business concluded, very talented Mike Jones, treated members to a little photographic magic, when he took the stage to demonstrate the computer program he uses to construct the amazing, contrived images, with which he has enjoyed phenomenal success in local, and international, competitions.

Next Thursday, members will participate in an open PDi competition, run by the Tenby and District Club, in St Florence village hall.

Next meeting, Thursday, 5 October, in the Memorial Hall, will be an in-house competition, on the theme of ‘Art in Nature’.

New members are always very welcome.

Walkers

ON Saturday, 9 September, eight New Quay Walkers with 2 dogs met at Strumble Head Lighthouse car park to begin a mile circular walk of coast and countryside led by Ian Metcalf.

The weather was ideal for brisk walk. The first mile was a pleasant amble eastwards along the coast path before turning inland in the to Trenenewydd. These footpaths were level, well marked.

Later the route opened out as the group climbed towards Garn Goch, Garn Fechan and Garn Fawr. The view from these points was tremendous, with the lighthouse backed by blue sea, white horses and the Stenna Line ferry proceeding towards Ireland.

The walkers scrambled up Garn Fawr to the trig point at the top standing 213 metres above sea level. From there it was a careful walk along stony paths down to Pwllderi.

Dewi Emrys, the celebrated Welsh poet with connections to New Quay and Talgarreg paid homage to the wild and menacing cove at Pwllderi in his poem of the same name from which walker recited a verse while standing above the foaming sea.

They walked back along the undulating coast path back to Strumble Head viewing seals and their pups down below in an isolated bay.

Memories of the walk were shared in the Seaview Hotel, Goodwick on the way home.

Next walk from Llanarth, Saturday, 14 October, meet at Castell y Geifr Farm at 10.30am to explore coast and countryside between Cei Bach and Llwyncelyn. Details: call Glyn 01545 561285.
