Royal British Legion
THE branch annual dinner was held at the rygby club on 24 January in the presence of the mayor and mayoress and some 70 members and friends including members of the Cardigan branch.
The chairman Kenneth Jones presided.
Following the meal and loyal toast, the chairman spoke briefly about events of the past year before inviting Ken Rathbone, branch president, to make a presentation with the mayor to Alec Berkley (successively secretary, Poppy Appeal organiser, standard bearer, membership secretary and branch vice-president) who is leaving the community to take up residence as an in-pensioner at The Royal Hospital, Chelsea on 3 February.
The president reflected that Mr Berkley, as well as working with the community, has for many years given loyal and conspicuous service to the Royal British Legion and would be missed.
Ieuan James, the current Poppy Appeal organiser, spoke of the goodwill of the town council, local businesses, and residents who had raised over £9,000 so far for the 2019/20 annual appeal and expressed his thanks to the Scouts, Cadets and all who have helped to raise this sum.
The mayor then presented The John O Morgan’s cup to Derek Jones, who had again raised the largest sum through his house-tohouse collection.
The Barry Evans Trophy for the largest static location was won by Ysgol y Ddwylan and will be presented on a suitable future occasion.
The mayor spoke of Mr Berkley’s contribution to the community and of Frank Perry who had also resided at the Royal Hospital.
The chairman expressed thanks to branch members for their welcome, to Helen Corbett who had made arrangements for the evening, and to Mr and Mrs Hunter and their catering team. The raffle was drawn and grateful thanks were given to all who participated.
