AS a young person, it’s not often that you get the chance to build your own world, without grown ups, and make all the rules.

But this was the offer made to youngsters aged seven to 15 by London-based artist Cara Rainbow.

Cara, who was brought up in Ysbyty Ystwyth and who attended Penglais School, has been running an arts club throughout August at Penparcau Community Forum’s The Hub community centre.

One recurrent theme of Cara’s art explores the experience of dealing with being placed in a strange environment, motivated in part by her relocation from rural west Wales to study art at Goldsmith’s, University of London.

This project was inspired by an art video by Mikhail Karakis, who filmed children taking over an abandoned village in Tuscany.

“The three groups have been exploring their local spaces through performance, costumes, making dyes from local produce, drawing and collecting sounds,” said Cara.

Inspired and delighted by the creativity shown, Cara added: “My favourite moment was seeing a group’s creative approach to making new dyes from leaves and un-ripened berries.”

In recognition of the creativity shown by the groups, Cara has been able to be less prescriptive than usual, providing them with options rather than directions.

Having graduated with a first class degree from Goldsmiths, Cara now tutors art classes for young people for the college, who have sponsored this ‘aber art club’ project.

The culmination of which will be the creation of a video by each of the three groups.

There will be a free screening at Aberystwyth Museum at 4pm on Wednesday, 29 August, and again at 2pm Thursday, 30 August, at Penparcau Community Forum, The Hub, at 2pm.
