Mothers’ Union

A SUCCESSFUL Spring Festival celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Mothers’ Union in Tregaron was held in St Caron’s Church, commencing with a Grand Concert on Friday, 25 May.

The vicar, Rev Canon Philip Wyn Davies welcomed everyone. Branch leader Mary Lewis compered the evening, introducing the guest artist, tenor Huw Rhys Evans, who was brought up and educated in Tregaron and has a very successful singing career in London.

Neli Jones was the accompanist for the evening. Bronwen Morgan introduced the local singing group, Parti Ffrindiau, Helen Bessant soloist, and young Gethin and Dafydd Bennett who gave memorable recitations.

The president of the evening was Keith Bush QC, who was a choir boy in St Caron’s Church before leaving to lead a brilliant career as a barrister in London and in Wales. A lovely evening of local talent.

This was followed by the opening of the flower festival on Saturday, 26 May. The theme was each decade from 1938 - 2018. Members of the Mother’s Union proudly arranged flowers on each window depicting each decade commencing with an exhibition of the work of the MU from 1938.

The end of the Second World War in 1945 was celebrated as was the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth ll in 1953. The 1960s saw the hey-dey of the pony trekking holidays in Tregaron, but sadly the loss of the local train service.

In 1976 the fast flowing river Brenig ran dry. 1987 – a proud moment when the Most Rev George Noakes, a local boy educated in Tregaron and a much loved and respected Parish priest in Tregaron Church from 1959 to 1967, was enthroned Archbishop of Wales.

The 1990s saw great advances in technology and the Millenium reflected upon the past and welcomed the future.

During the 2010s Plant Dewi is formed and an historic occasion is celebrated when Bishop Joanna becomes first Lady Bishop of St David’s in 2018.

Visitors from far and wide were welcomed to the church throughout the weekend when over £1,800 was raised for the church repair fund.

Local artists, local scenes

A sale of artworks, predominantly of local scenes and by local artists, from a private collection, is being held in Tregaron during the month of June.

The proceeds of the sale will go towards the Glasfryn project – the conversion of a property into a store for MOMA Machynlleth’s ever growing Tabernacle Collection.

The works are available for viewing and sale at Y Talbot.

English Methodists Church
