Clwb Cinio

THIRTY-FOUR members attended our lunch on Wednesday, 22 May in Y Talbot.

They had a pleasant meal and the entertainment was provided by Karine Davies, who talked about Betsi Cadwaladr, who worked as a nurse in the Crimea War. She worked with Florence Nightingale, but the two ladies did not get on so Betsi moved from the hospital in Salamanca to the one in Balaclava.

There she not only nursed the soldiers, but also looked after their health by making sure that the kitchens were run as hygienically as possible.

She became ill with cholera and dysentery and returned home in 1855, a year before the end of the war, died in 1860 and was buried in a pauper’s grave in north London.

On Wednesday, 19 June, 30 members and friends went on a trip to Welshpool. They visited the Old Station for refreshments plus retail therapy and were then taken on to the station where they boarded the train for Llanfair Caereinion in a compartment reserved for the club. The train travelled through some beautiful countryside and it was possible to get out at Llanfair Caereinion to look at the station. On their return to Welshpool they were taken to Coed y Dinas for a short while and finally on to the George Borrow Hotel for an excellent meal before returning to Tregaron about 8.30pm.

Next month’s lunch is on Wednesday, 17 July, because the Royal Welsh is the following week.

The entertainment will be provided by Parch Robin Morris, vicar of Ysbyty Cynfyn Church. Please let Delyth know if you would like to attend.

Clwb Cerdded/Walking Club

THE next walk is scheduled for 13 July and has been organised by Lucy Swannell/Avarinah Davies – 01974 261789/07938 787926.

The walk is called ‘Discover the coast – Llanrhystud to Aberystwyth’.

This stretch of the Ceredigion Coast Path, which forms part of the 870-mile Wales Coast Path, is remote and dramatic which will make the slopes you’ll encounter worth the effort.

They will use the hourly bus service between Aberystwyth and Llanrhystud to get to the start, then walk back to Aberystywth enjoying spectacular cliff top views, scenic pit stops and looking out for ‘Twll Twrw’ (the noise hole) also known as Monk’s Cave.

The walk is to last approximately six hours and is graded an easy walk over a distance of 9.5 miles, with an ascent of 2,100ft/650m. Meet at Aberystwyth bus station – allow enough time for the 10am bus.

Lift shares will be arranged and exact bus time/stop confirmed nearer the time.
