THE latest community news from Tywyn
History Society
ON Monday, 8 October, the society hosted a panel-led sharing of World War Two memories of the area’s residents.
Some contributions were in the form of pre-recorded interviews and others were made spontaneously by those who had been small children at the time, either as locals or as evacuees.
The panel speakers were Les Darbyshire, author of the popular account of World War Two in Meirionnydd ‘Our Backyard War’.
He gave an absorbing talk about his experiences as a young serviceman with a significant and varied wartime career in the Royal Navy.
The second panellist was Sir Meurig Rees, whose contribution as a local farmer in a reserved occupation played an equally vital role in the war effort.
Both speakers were much appreciated. Following the discussion, Veronica Savage contributed a challenging quiz on a military theme.
The winner, with seven out of 10, was justifiably applauded.
The subject of the next meeting, on Monday, 12 November will be ‘The Making of the Resort of Tywyn’.
The speaker will be John Hirst, from Harlech Historical Society.
Please note that this will be at the earlier time of 7pm to accommodate visitors from further afield.
The meeting will take place at the Tywyn Baptist Church.
