THE latest community news from Tywyn
History society
THE society’s meeting on 10 December began on a sombre note as Ivor Moody, the vice-chair, gave notice of the death of Arthur Caley, who has played such a prominent role in the history of Tywyn.
Tribute was given to Arthur’s contribution to the town.
The announcement was made of the success of the society’s bid for a Heritage Lottery grant to create a heritage trail of five information display boards at key locations and two town walks’ leaflets.
Acknowledgement was also given to the town council’s contribution to the enterprise.
The society also thanked all those who have worked hard to achieve this result and those who have given the moral support so essential to the project.
Following this item a discussion extended the previous month’s talk by John Hirst on ‘The making of Tywyn as a resort’.
The discussion was led by complementary but refreshingly individual short talks by Liz Deakin, Tony Mitchell, Quentin Deakin and a challenging quiz on the theme by Veronica Savage.
This quiz was won by Sue Whitehouse and Julia Wilson.
Bookings for the New Year lunch were taken and members took the opportunity to suggest themes for next year’s programme in order to enable the initiation of forward planning.
The next meeting on 14 January 2019 at 7pm at the Baptist Church will be a talk by Selwyn Walters of Lampeter Historical Society on the subject of ‘Churches and Chapels in Wales’.
Selwyn hosted the society on their summer trip to Lampeter University and all who were present will look forward to an entertaining and inspiring evening.
