Inner Wheel Club

PRESIDENT Mair Worsey welcomed fellow members to the January meeting held in the Talyllyn Railway Restaurant.

After wishing all best wishes for the new year, Mair informed them of the death of Margaret Woodhouse, a past member of the club.

A donation of £50 was given to a hospice in her memory.

It was also voted to donate £50 to the residents of Morfa Cadfan towards a new green house.

£100 was donated to T? Gobaith – Hope House from money collected by club members instead of sending out Christmas cards.

Ladies have also donated a number of tins of food and household items towards the local food bank for the needy.

As the meeting was held on International Inner Wheel Day, the Candle of Friendship was lit before the meal by Win Bottrill.

The members were joined by guest speakers Mr and Mrs Quentin Deakin to the dinner.

Following the meal Quentin Deakin informed all in an interesting talk about the history of Tywyn and showed photos of how much the town had changed over the years.

He also informed them about the formation of the proposed Tywyn historical Trail.

President Mair presented Quentin with a cheque towards his charity.

History society

THE society’s talk on 14 January, ‘Church and Chapel in Wales’ by Selwyn Walters of Lampeter’s Historical Society, attracted a record attendance and was much appreciated.

In his comprehensive and entertaining account, Selwyn skilfully placed his own chapel-dominated boyhood in Swansea within the context.

He considered the vital contribution made by both Non-conformist and Established churches to Welsh society as a whole, its education, culture and identity.

After the talk, in other business, the society agreed to approach the Marine department of the county council with a proposal to display one of two large anchors recently found on the Tywyn side of the Dysynni estuary on the promenade in Tywyn.

The historical heritage of ship-building on the Dysynni and in the town was briefly discussed.

On Wednesday, 16 January, the society enjoyed a seasonal meal at the King’s Café in the Wharf Station of the Talyllyn Railway at which they also celebrated the achievement of a Heritage Lottery grant for the creation of an historical town trail and walk leaflets.

The next meeting on Monday, 11 February, at 7pm at the Baptist Church will follow up the theme of church and chapel in Wales by a panel-led discussion.
