Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn
THOUGHTFUL pupils have raised over £500 for charity.
Red Nose Day was enthusiastically supported by staff and pupils at Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn, who paid £1 for wearing red clothes instead of school uniform, competed in football/netball shoot-outs and donated and bought cakes.
The school offered thanks to the pupils and parents who brought in “delicious” cakes and to the local Co-op store for once again donating produce to help the fundraising along.
Gabby Jones, Year 8, won the netball competition and Ios Rodgers, Year 7, finished on top in the football competition. Ed Hughes, astronomy teacher, was judged the best goalie.
A special thank you went to James Carver, the school’s own physics teacher and rock star, for entertaining the pupils with some of his songs during their lunchtime break. A total of £521.25 was raised.
Garden club
TYWYN Garden Club met in the Baptist Church on 14 March at 7.30pm.
The speaker for the evening was Stan Mahon of Kerimeg Nurseries, near Newtown. He gave a very interesting talk on the history of vegetables.
The annual outing is planned for 23 June. The club intends to visit Wightwick Manor, a National Trust property near Wolverhampton where there is a superb collection of William Morris furnishings, as well as gardens designed by Thomas Mawson. Contact Sue Yeomans or Margaret Evans for further information.
The next meeting will be in the Baptist Church once again. There is an open meeting on 11 April when Philip Aubury, formerly director of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, will talk about and give a demonstration of propagation. The meeting will start at 7.30pm prompt. Refreshments served after the talk.
NSPCC
THE AGM of the Tywyn/Bryncrug NSPCC took place on Thursday, 30 March, at the Baptist Chapel.
Jenny Tinsley was re-elected as chairman for 2017-18 and was thanked for her work during the year, as was Anne Lloyd-Jones who was re-elected as treasurer. Both she and Jenny will share the role of secretary.
Jenny was pleased to welcome two new members – Rosemary and Marcia – to the committee, and was sad to report that due to bereavement the branch had lost two valuable members, Claudia Charlton and Pam Williams.
The committee raised over £1,232 during 2016 and wished to thank everyone for their contributions and support during the year. Anne reported that since she had taken over as treasurer in 1988 over £53,000 had been raised locally by the committee.
The past year saw the flag days raise £594. Collection boxes in shops and cafés around the town raised nearly £143.75, with the Market Hall café raising £56.25 of this sum.The fun events of the year were the skittles night at the Neptune Club which raised £275 and the coffee morning, with the nearly new stall, raising £220.
Planned NSPCC events for the coming year include a coffee morning and unwanted gift stall at the Baptist Church on Friday, 15 September; a skittles night on 4 November at the Neptune Social Club; and flag days in Tywyn on Monday, 31 July, and Monday, 7 August.
The committee would welcome new members or anyone wishing to donate and help out in any way with the work to raise funds for the children’s charity. If interested contact Anne Lloyd-Jones on 01654 710457.
