On Thursday, 6 April, members met at the golf club, Aberdovey.

Following the business meeting members enjoyed a tasty meal after which president Jane and international service organiser Di Derry welcomed Dr George Teturswamy and his wife Rani.

Dr George founded the Northern Cleft Palate Foundation and has recently been awarded, by Prime Minister Theresa May, the Point of Light award which recognises outstanding individual volunteers.

His organisation is manned by volunteers who travel out to India to operate mostly on children but also a few adults who were born with cleft lip and palate deformity. The surgical correction is life changing for these children enabling them to eat and speak normally but very importantly returns their facial features to normal too.

President Jane thanked Dr George for his visit and for his dedication in helping these unfortunate children from poor areas of India and improving their lives so much and presented him with a cheque for £500.

The club also presented president Jane with a cheque for £300 for her charity of the year, The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation. Marie Owens won the raffle.Rotary ClubPRESIDENT Anthony Pearson and members of the Rotary Club of Tywyn were pleased to host a presentation on Thursday, 6 April, by Bill McCann from Advice Mid Wales in Machynlleth and Dave Hooper from the Barmouth foodbank. Bill described the work of The Bro Dyfi Advice Centre and the valuable unbiased and non-judgmental advice given to people on a range of problems including help with benefits, money management, family problems, education and clinical negligence. The advice centre also gives valuable assistance to people who are facing problems feeding their families and co-operate closely with the foodbank, offering help to obtain vouchers that can be exchanged for food supplies. Dave explained how the Barmouth food-bank is responsible for helping people in the region, covering an area from Criccieth to Machynlleth to Bala. In the last year alone the foodbank has received over 10 tons of food donated at collection points in supermarkets, Christian organisations and local churches. Although some food donations are plentiful, other important items are in short supply and Dave urged donors to check the food-bank website – barmouth.foodbank.org.uk – for which items are most urgently needed. As is the normal practice with guest speakers at club meetings, Anthony presented each speaker with a cheque for £200 for their charitable organisations.
