Rotary Club
ON 12 October, the members of the Rotary Club of Tywyn invited Desmond (Des) George to give a presentation entitled ‘My Gap Year’ (A sort of round the world in 365 days).
Des is a well-known and respected figure in Aberdyfi being the manager of the Neuadd Dyfi and is central to many of the social activities in the village.
The presentation was a very entertaining and amusing account of the ‘gap year’ that he took after he graduated from university.
Des set off to cycle through France into Switzerland, but found the going was tough and decided to return to London.
A chance encounter with the astronomer Heather Couper gave him an opportunity to work at the University of Edinburgh astronomical observatory in Hawaii studying the behavior of the Pole Star.
After a time, Des joined the crew on a sailing boat travelling across the Pacific via Christmas Island to Tahiti and on to the Cook Islands, where he joined the crew of the ship ‘Roaratonga’ and sailed on to New Zealand, where he worked in a boat yard doing odd jobs.
On the next leg of his journey Des joined the circus in Brisbane as a chauffeur for staff and guests and travelled with the show across Australia.
He recounted several amusing anecdotes about life in the circus and his experiences with the circus animals.
He continued his journey to Nepal and India and from there to Egypt and on to the West Indies, where he was offered a job in what he understood to be in Abu Dhabi in which he was very interested, however Abu Dhabi turned out to be ‘Aberdyfi’ where he eventually settled.
President Nancy Clark thanked Des for his entertaining presentation and as is the custom with all our speakers presented him with a cheque for £200 that Des nominated to donate to the Neuadd Dyfi funds.
Bowling Club
A BOWLING team have celebrated their 30th anniversary in grand style.
Tywyn Bowling Club were partying at the Neuadd Pendre on Saturday evening, 14 October.
The club has been in existence since 1987 and club stalwart Sue Marsh and her helpers had made sure the hall was looking lovely for the 30th Annual Dinner and Presentation of Trophies. The members and friends present enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Tommy Rowlands.
The meal was followed by the presentations with music and dancing to round off an enjoyable evening.
The members may have put away their crown green bowls for the season, but they will still be getting together again before the end of the year.
A pre-Christmas social event is taking place at the Neuadd Pendre, on Saturday, 2 December, with a quiz and other games.
Everyone is welcome, if you are thinking of joining on the green next season, this would be an opportunity to come and meet some of the members.
