AT their last meeting, before their short summer break, members of the WI met in the Community Hall on Monday, 2 July, when president Jean Ecklund welcomed Becky Hulme from the Wildlife Trust South and West Wales.

This trust, one of the most active in the country, has in recent years funded a person to monitor a large red squirrel project.

The red squirrel survives by a thread in mid-Wales where the project has been looking at ways to provide an environment which favours it over the grey squirrel.

While it is not possible in mid Wales to exclude the grey squirrel as has been achieved in Anglesey, it is hoped that the project will ensure that this beautiful native species can still be seen in parts of the area.

The preceding business session heard excellent reports of recent WI events in the county and invitations were received from neighbouring institutes to events planned later in the summer.

For the first time ever, two teams from the institute competed at the County Quiz in Llanrhystud.

Members of Waunfawr WI will be manning a stall at the Waunfawr Summer Fete on Saturday, 14 July, and extend a welcome to all ladies on the Waun to join them at the first Monday of the month meetings which restart in September.
