People behind a community pub are appealing for people to vote for them in a competition to win £5,000.

The people of Nefyn managed to raise over £80,000 last year to buy the village pub, Tafarn y Heliwr – The Sportsman and run it as a community venture.

Clearing work has since started and the committee are now looking into funding by turning what once used to be a busy pub into a welcoming community asset.

They are now hoping to win £5,000 from the Calor Rural Community Fund to help paint the frontage of the building, buy new signs, lights, bike rack, bench and hanging baskets and help bring a bit of life and pride back to the High Street.

The committee have worked closely with the community by sending out questionnaires and organising information stalls and an open day.

Residents and shareholders have voiced opinions on what they would like to see in the pub, plans have been carefully worked around what the community wanted.

So plans are afoot to not only re-open as a pub but to offer light meals and teas, both upper floors will have accommodation aimed towards Coastal path walkers.

A spokesperson for the committee said: “Living in a rural community can make people of all ages feel isolated, be it someone working from home, a stay at home parent or an elderly person, we have the aim of offering a warm welcome to all and helping to combat the rural and social isolation that affects lots of people in the Nefyn area. Volunteers are already commenting on how rewarding pulling together to make the project work is!”

Another project in Meirionnydd is also bidding for £5,000 from Calor Gas. Llanfihangel y Pennant Council want to win £5,000 so they can save Abergynolwyn park.
