AN ABERYSTWYTH man has made a formal complaint to Ceredigion County Council and Natural Resources Wales after both bodies “washed their hands” of the problem of shopping trolleys being dumped in the Rheidol river.

Karl Drinkwater lodged his complaint after being told by both bodies that they are “not responsible” for the removal of the “multiple” trolleys from the river which he said are “an environmental problem, a wildlife issue, a litter problem, and a possible safety issue”.

“Their removal should be covered by one or both of those organisations,” Mr Drinkwater said.

“Ceredigion County Council denied that it is anything to do with them, and said to go elsewhere; then Natural Resources Wales replied and said it is not their problem either.

“Something is very wrong here.

“It is obviously someone’s responsibility; yet both likely bodies are refusing to take any responsibility."

A council response said that “unfortunately Ceredigion Country Council is not responsible for the river in Aberystwyth” and directed enquiries to Natural Resources Wales.

A spokeswoman for Natural Resources Wales said that trolleys in rivers “would only be removed if they are causing a flood risk”.

“Otherwise, it falls to the responsibility of the land owner, or an organisation called Trolleywise may remove the trolleys,” the spokeswoman added.
