DOG owners in Aberaeron are being urged to control their pets following reports of cyclists being chased along the scenic riverbank walk leading to Llanerchaeron.

Sgt Delme Rees said complaints had been received that a number of dogs were being let off their leads.

Pressed by Cllr Mair Harrison on whether this was an offence, Sgt Rees replied that the key question was whether an animal was under proper control.

“You can have dogs not under control even when they’re on a lead,” he said, adding that police were planning to step up bike patrols along the riverside in a bid to combat the problem.

“I don’t think there’s a byelaw there,” he said.

“I think the number of dogs is getting out of hand,” replied Cllr Harrison.

“We have a lot of children and young families who use that path as well as cyclists.”
