MAJOR changes to day centre services in Powys going out to consultation could see the closure of units in both Machynlleth and Llanidloes.
The county council is warning that financial pressures mean a shake-up of the service is needed.
While the council has admitted that it is vital that changes are made to provide savings, it will consult on three options - keeping all day centres open, closing all day centres from March 2017, or phasing day centre closures over an extended period of time.
That could see Machynlleth’s day centre close in October 2017 and the day centre at Llanidloes closed from March 2018.
A report that was due to go before Powys County Council’s Cabinet as the Cambrian News was going to press on Tuesday said that to make up for the potential loss of day centres, the council would have to ensure a range of services are put in place to ensure the authority meets regulations.
That would include services aimed at stopping people from becoming isolated and a possible increase in the amount of domiciliary care that would be provided, which the council has admitted could actually lead to an increase in costs.
