FOLLOWING from yesterday’s flashback (which you can see by clicking the link at the bottom of this article), we look back at what the summer months brought you in Powys and Ceredigion.

May

A nurse was recognised for her work in Llanidloes. Sister Veronica Jarman won a Gold Kite Award after being nominated by Cllr Gareth Morgan for her work at the Penrallt Unit at Llanidloes Hospital.

A row broke out between New Quay Town Council and the local authority over how the town’s name should appear. Councillors seeking a new town sign insisted ‘Cei Newydd’ should be two separate words – but Ceredigion County Council said it should be one.

Firefighters and staff old and new said farewell to Aberystwyth fire station. Fire crews moved into new temporary accommodation at the TA centre ahead of a permanent move to a newly-built, completely redesigned station to be constructed in Trefechan on the site of the former one.

And extra hourly train services from Aberystwyth and Machynlleth to Shrewsbury started in May.

June

A VICAR spoke of his shock and anger that vandals had gone on a paint-spraying rampage inside a church in Llanon. Intruders targeted a banner and noticeboards as well as a toy used by youngsters. They also left an obscene anti-religious remark on a gate pillar outside.

The following appeared in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List: Tegwen Morris, national director of Merched y Wawr and former Aberystwyth University student Natasha Devon, who both received MBEs, and Clare Hughes of Pontrhydfendigaid and Avril Jones, Llanrhystud, who received BEMs for voluntary work.

July

A FERWIG couple said they felt “blessed” to be alive when their house was damaged by lightning. The roof and loft of the house belonging to the Greenshields family was destroyed, but Graham and Becky and their three children were not home at the time.

Machynlleth’s Annwen Lloyd Williams, head of administration at the Outward Bound, Aberdyfi, received a prestigious award at Buckingham Palace. She was awarded a Member of the Victorian Order for services to the Outward Bound Trust.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Maesllwyni organic farm in Machynlleth and Nanteos Mansion, near Aberystwyth.

August

GREEN-FINGERED pensioner Brian Dolan brought the tropics to Bow Street after a banana plant he tended for 14 years finally bore fruit.

Tegwyn P Jones of Mallwyd, received a certificate of Fellowship for his contribution to farming, conservation and energy production.

YFC Mydroilyn celebrated its 60th anniversary in style and raised £14,000 for charity in the process.

Members of the Hasidic Jewish community, turned away by Aberystwyth University after a health and safety row in 2013, returned in larger numbers after buying a disused rehabilitation centre outside the town.

A Machynlleth woman returned home after completing a 3,700-mile charity walk around Wales. Ursula Martin raised £9,500 for Target Ovarian Cancer and Penny Brohn Cancer Care.
