CEREDIGION residents have until Monday to have their say on a controversial proposal to charge sixth form pupils £390 a year to use the school bus.

The county council issued a consultation document on 22 February, which insisted such a charge was “reasonable” while admitting it could deter some youngsters from studying for their A-levels.

If brought in, the charge would be introduced in September 2017 and would include a similar charge for pupils who use ‘spare seats’ to get to school.

At a cabinet meeting earlier this year, Barry Rees, the council’s head of learning services, said the move would see the council take similar measures to “most” other Welsh authorities insisting that the council is “probably at the tail end of this”.

The consultation period will end on Monday, 21 March, and people are invited to respond with their thoughts by phone on: 01970 633364; by e-mail at: [email protected]; or by posting to: Mr Barry Rees, Strategic Director Learning & Partnerships, Ceredigion County Council, Learning Services, Canolfan Rheidol, Rhodfa Padarn, Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, SY23 3UE.
