Madam,

Christianity is a religion based on love, forgiveness and joy. The desire to demolish a church filled with beauty and built with love seems inappropriate and damaging.

The bishop’s decision flies in the face of democratic choices made by the local congregation and of the real needs of people in Aberystwyth.

This church is my spiritual home. Having been born in Aberystwyth, I was baptised and received my first holy communion and confirmation in the Church of St Winifrede’s and the Holy Angels.

My belief in kindness and love was enhanced by its inspirational architecture. While any church is made up of people rather than buildings, this is a space that has a special ability to encourage and sustain prayer and communal understanding.

I have many non-Catholic friends who have told me how often they would drop into the church for a spell of quiet reflection. The central location makes this very easy for all to access.

This is a site that is perfect for locals and visitors alike and a building that enhances grace in all who pray within its enfolding walls.

The cost of its repair has been vastly exaggerated and its loss would be incalculable.

Yours etc,

Dr Mary Ellison, Brynymor Terrace, Aberystwyth.
