Madam,

I refer to the letter last week with the headline “Costs of reopening rail line hugely outweigh the benefits”.

I read with interest the letter submitted with the above headline. The comments are very similar to those closing the lines in the ’60s but in opposing ways.

Dr Beeching closed lines because he thought it was the best way to reduce the costs to parent company British Rail. May I say also I used to travel a lot by train in the ’60s and the trains and carriages were filthy.

How wrong was he, by removing these lines with no consideration of investment for future generations.

We now go onto the letter, the comments that are made make no consideration of investing for future generations to not only use the rail line and therefore reduce traffic roads to Carmarthen, but also open the necessary infrastructure for passenger and freight and therefore probability of needed commercial investment in mid Wales.

Invest to accumulate. Also the cost based upon the life of this project would be a small price to pay.

Yours etc,

Ray Blackburne, Penparcau, Aberystwyth.
