MACHYNLLETH town councillors have said they do not want to get involved in a war of words with Tywyn Town Council, but have insisted they will continue to support the current proposal for a new Dyfi Bridge.
The January meeting of the town council received a letter from counterparts in Tywyn saying that there is opposition in Meirionnydd to the current proposal for a new Dyfi Bridge and criticising the fact that community councils in Meirionnydd were not invited to a consultation meeting held in Machynlleth.
However, Machynlleth town councillors said their support for the proposed new bridge was matched by residents in the town and they insisted that the scheme was not being put forward by them. Also, Machynlleth councillors said the consultation meeting had not been arranged by them, but was instead organised by contractors appointed as part of the scheme.
Cllr Michael Williams said Tywyn Town Council’s views on the proposed new bridge were a matter for Tywyn councillors.
He said: “I don’t think we want to be involved in any altercation with another council. Tywyn Council, and any other council has the right to have its own views, but that also applies to Machynlleth Town Council.
“We represent the people of Machynlleth and every person bar one I’ve spoken to is very happy with the scheme.”
