AN ABERAERON councillor has made a crunch decision to give up her favourite brand of crisps - unless the company behind them can produce recyclable bags.

Self-confessed crisp-lover Cllr Elizabeth Evans has written to both Walkers and their renowned ambassador Gary Lineker urging them to come up with a suitable alternative.

Cllr Evans – who is threatening a boycott of her favourite snack – threw down the gauntlet after town councillors agreed to support all efforts to achieve a single-use plastic-free Aberaeron.

“I have written to Walkers saying I will stop eating their jumbo-sized packets of crisps unless they make them recyclable,” she told laughing, slightly-disbelieving colleagues.

“Can you believe that crisp packets are not recyclable? I have told Walkers I will no longer be eating their products until they are.”

After the meeting Cllr Evans told the Cambrian News she was deadly serious.

“Yes, I asked Walkers what measures they were taking to ensure their crisp packets were recyclable,” she said.

“Other crisp packets are also not recyclable – but I eat Walkers! I tweeted them and Gary Lineker too. I know it sounds extreme, but I eat a lot of crisps and how many people realise their packets aren’t recyclable?”

Cllr Evans said she had not yet received a reply from either Walkers or Gary Lineker.

A Walkers spokesperson said: “Our goal is to design all of our packaging to be recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025 and we are moving as quickly as possible to make this happen.

“Protecting the planet is hugely important to us and we recognise the need to increase recycling rates."
