Aberaeron town councillors have expressed their unanimous opposition towards North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency plans to improve pedestrian and road user safety in the vicinity of the Alban Square bus stop – as they want to protect Cae Sgwâr.
In 2016 NMWTRA commissioned a feasibility report looking at the then existing pedestrian demands and available options for pedestrians crossing the trunk road.
“The report concluded that the current pedestrian and vehicle flows did not warrant a further controlled crossing point in Aberaeron,” said a spokesperson.
Now, however, councillors have rejected an offer to enter into discussions which could potentially include alterations to the western boundary of Cae Sgwâr.
“It has been of concern to NMWTRA that pedestrians sometimes have to contend with buses when passing the bus shelters as the relatively narrow footway may be temporarily obstructed by passengers, buggies, bicycles etc,” added the spokesman.
“Furthermore there have been concerns regarding the available space for buses in the bays and the required space for buses to turn into them, often resulting in buses protruding into the carriageway and obstructing visibility at the junctions.
“Can’t we just reject this out of hand?” asked Cllr Mair Harrison. “They have tried this before.”
Cllr Elizabeth Evans suggested the issue lay with the footway rather than the bus stop itself.
