A poem entitled ‘My Little
Country Cottage’...
I’ve got a country cottage
And I keep it very neat
It has everything I need in it
And it’s really very sweet
I don’t have any neighbours
Because the street is full
Of other houses just like mine
So it can get rather dull
I come down to my cottage
Whenever my schedule is clear
I’d love to stay for longer
But only manage twice a year
You’d like my country cottage
It really is sublime
And if I didn’t love the city
I would live there all the time
So I pay a local gardener
To cut the hedge and lawn
To tend the flowers and the shrubs
To keep it all well shorn
I pay a local cleaner
To come in once a week
To dust and make my cottage clean
And keep it shabby chic
My cleaner and my gardener
Both live in little flats
And pay high rents for places
Where you couldn’t swing two cats
I feel I’m almost local
Keeping the place alive
Buying olives from the village shop
Allowing it to thrive
Not everyone is friendly
And some are almost rude
Implying it is my fault
That local people feel screwed
But I LOVE my country cupboard
So no matter what they say
I will keep my second house
For my biannual holiday
