A couple from Llanrwst has upped sticks and taken up dream jobs as island wardens on a small but scientifically and historically significant Ynys Enlli.
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be the wardens of Enlli (Bardsey), a remote island which is a National Nature Reserve, has a working farm and a bird observatory, has been given to Ned and Sophie Schärer who moved to Enlli with their two children last week.
The Bardsey Island Trust, which own and manages the island, appointed Ned and Sophie to take on the roles of warden and assistant warden to live on the island full-time.
They will step into the shoes of Siân Stacey who left in December after three successful years as warden/island manager of Enlli (Bardsey).
Bardsey Island Trust chair, Rod Gritten, said: “We are thrilled to welcome the Schärer family to Enlli, they bring with them an excellent skill set as well as a wealth of experience and ideas to benefit island life and the visitor experience.”
Prior to their arrival the Schärers said that “the whole family is ready for, and looking forward to, the challenges of life on Enlli!”
The wardens will be responsible for the care and maintenance of the trust’s 10 letting houses, ensuring visitors enjoy their stay, recruiting and managing the many volunteers who help out each year as well as be an active part of this small isolated community.
On top of this, they will be home-schooling their two children and taking care of their horses, chickens and goats.
