A TALIESIN man who needed hospital treatment after stabbing himself in the leg was made “aggressive and unpredictable” after drinking on top of prescription medication, he told magistrates.
Mathew Rumney, of 2 Wesley Terrace, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly after he became angry and agitated at Bronglais Hospital’s A&E department while he was receiving treatment.
Prosecutor Steve Davies said police were initially called when Rumney was receiving treatment from an ambulance crew on 28 July after he’d been injured by a penknife.
Rumney, 35, was taken to Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth, but police were called again later, when hospital staff said that Rumney had been “kicking off” and had been hitting himself.
A staff member tried stopping Rumney hitting himself, but Mr Davies said, while he was struggling, Rumney almost hit the staff nurse.
When officers arrived Rumney had calmed down, but his behaviour was described as “fluctuating” between being calm and aggressive and agitated. Mr Davies said Rumney was clearly drunk and he said that he had drunk wine and vodka.
At one point Rumney approached a police officer and stared at them, before demanding to be allowed to go home. He then pulled a cannula out of his arm, causing blood to spray around the room.
One officer managed to grab Rumney and push him onto a bed to try to restrain him.
Rumney, who represented himself in court, said he had been taking prescription medication which combined with alcohol had led to him being “more aggressive and unpredictable”.
He was fined £80 and will pay costs totalling £115.
