A MENTAL health nurse at a care home near Cardigan has avoided a suspension after a professional standards hearing ruled that his conviction for drink-driving and dangerous driving could be dealt with by a caution order.

Peter Greaves, who works at the Plas Bridell Care Home, appeared before a panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council over his conviction in December 2015 for drink-driving and two charges of dangerous driving.

While the panel concluded that Greaves’ fitness to practise was impaired, they ruled that the sentence he received in Swansea Crown Court and his remorse and understanding of the impact of his actions meant that a suspension or striking-off order was not justified and that he could instead be made subject to a five-year caution order.

The panel heard that Greaves had been given an eight-month jail term suspended for a year and was banned from driving for four years after the incident that saw him drive at speeds up to 80mph in a 30mph zone and ignore police attempts to pull him over for over 20 miles.
