A MOTORIST hit a bollard and parked car while over the drink-drive limit in Aberystwyth, magistrates have heard.

Mathew Lee Davies, of 1 Fron Fraith, Cnwch Coch, pleaded guilty to drink-driving in the early hours of 23 June after hitting the bollard and parked car at Maes Heli.

Davies also admitted a charge of driving without insurance.

Prosecutor Helen Tench said police were called to the crash scene at around 1.30am after the crash was reported.

Officers saw that a bollard had been hit, as well as a parked car.

Further down the road was Davies’ car which had suffered damage, including damage to a front tyre.

Davies, 29, told police that he had drunk two pints, but failed a roadside breath test.

A breath test at the police station showed that Davies had 46 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

While being taken to the police station, Davies told officers that there had been a car on his side of the road which he had swerved to avoid and admitted hitting the bollard but said he hadn’t hit the parked car.

However, at the police station he said he could not remember much about the incident, but did remember hitting the bollard.

Checks showed that only Davies’ wife was insured to drive the car.

Ms Tench said Davies had a previous drink-drive conviction which meant he would be subject to an extended driving ban.

Defence solicitor Iestyn Davies said Davies had been struggling after the breakdown of his marriage and had been on medication to help with mental health issues which may have exacerbated the effects of the alcohol he had drunk.

Mr Davies said: “Things aren’t going well for him at the moment.”

He said that Davies’ wife had arranged the car insurance, but that Davies accepted he hadn’t checked to see whether he was on the policy so took responsibility.

Davies was banned from driving for three years and will pay a fine of £240 and costs of £115.

His driving licence was also endorsed with six penalty points for the no insurance charge.
