A SHOP-FITTER working in Aberystwyth verbally abused shop staff after they called police when he started throwing newspapers and packets of crisps around, magistrates have heard.

Thomas Liedland, 26, admitted being drunk and disorderly and possession of cannabis after he was arrested following the incident in the Terrace Road Spar store in the early hours of 12 April.

Prosecutor Kevin Challinor said police were called by staff at the Spar store shortly after 3.20am because Liedland had been causing problems and was throwing items around the store.

The police had already received calls from the store about Liedland’s behaviour and when officers attended and spoke to staff and Liedland they noticed that he smelt of alcohol and was slurring his speech.

He then became abusive toward Spar staff and was arrested for disorderly conduct. As he was being transported to Aberystwyth police station, officers smelt cannabis.

Liedland admitted he had smoked cannabis earlier that night and had some cannabis in his bag.

Defence solicitor Janem Jones said Liedland, of 10 Goldfinch Drive, Alsager in East Cheshire, was “disgusted” with his behaviour and said that after drinking he realised he should have gone back to the hotel where he was staying.

She said the alcohol had made him “hyper”, but Liedland was seeking assistance for issues with alcohol as he has had previous problems.

Ms Jones added: “There’s no reason why he can’t pull himself together.”

Liedland was fined £200 and ordered to pay costs totalling £115.
