A MAN has been jailed for burglary for a second time.

Jonathan Thwaite, 28, admitted breaking into a house in Penrheidol, Penparcau, Aberystwyth, at 5.30am on 19 October 2016 and stealing cash from a woman’s handbag.

Swansea Crown Court heard the break-in happened 10 days after another burglary in the street, for which Thwaite was jailed for three years and four months.

Georgina Buckley, prosecuting, said police obtained a DNA sample from the scene of the second burglary but it was not examined until months after Thwaite had been jailed for the other burglary.

She said the sound of Thwaite entering the house awoke Sarah Evans, who went downstairs to investigate. Thwaite had already run off and she found he had taken £50 from her handbag.

Scene-of-crime officers were able to recover a DNA sample from the purse, but it produced a mixed result.

Further expense had to be sanctioned for a more detailed examination, which resulted in Thwaite’s profile being identified.

His barrister, Tom Scapens, said Thwaite hoped to be released from prison before August and argued it would be unjust to sentence him to more jail time because he should have been sentenced for both burglaries at the same time.

The judge, Mr Recorder Mills, jailed Thwaite for eight months which, he said, should not extend the sentence he was currently serving.

He told Thwaite he could have “come clean” about this burglary at the time of his arrest.

Thwaite, who lived close to Penrheidol at the time, admitted burglary.
