A LLANARTH man with a history of violence has been saved from jail—by the young woman he beat up.

Kasie Wilson, 18, assured Judge Huw Davies that she would feel safe having Jay Cockburn back home, even though he had broken her jaw.

Cockburn, of Y Stable, Cringoed, Oakford, had admitted assaulting Miss Wilson, causing grievous bodily harm and to cultivating nine cannabis plants.

Cockburn, 24, appeared at Swansea Crown Court via video link with Swansea prison for sentencing.

Tom Scapens, prosecuting, said Miss Wilson had rolled over and disconnected a lead to the Playstation Cockburn had been using. Cockburn became angry and she fled to a second bedroom and used her feet to try to keep the door closed.

But Cockburn smashed his way in, removing the door from its hinges, and got on top of her. Then, he rained down punches to her face, breaking her jaw.

Mr Scapens said at first Miss Wilson said she had accidentally walked into a door but then told her grandparents the truth. When police confronted Cockburn he admitted the attack.

Miss Wilson was treated at Morriston hospital, Swansea, where doctors used metal plates and screws to repair her jaw.

Before Judge Davies announced Cockburn’s sentence Miss Wilson asked to address the court.

She said they had been going through “a bad patch” and that Cockburn had never hit her before.
