A “BORN and bred” Aberaeron man threatened to glass a barmaid and threw a bar stool at a pub landlord who is a family friend, a court has heard.

James Robert Shaw, 22, was visiting his family in Aberaeron and had gone on a night out with former schoolmates when he got involved in a row after he was refused alcohol in the Black Lion pub on 17 March.

Prosecutor Kevin Challinor said police were called to the pub at around 10.30pm as Shaw had become aggressive. Landlord James Dalton said Shaw had been denied service because he was too drunk, but quickly became aggressive and started shouting.

He picked up a chair to throw at Mr Dalton, but was stopped by another customer, but then picked up a stool and threw it, hitting Mr Dalton on the elbow,Aberystwyth magistrates heard.

Shaw had also told a barmaid that “I’ll glass you now”, but was then removed from the pub shortly before a window was smashed.

Following his arrest Shaw said he was too drunk to remember what had happened, but accepted the evidence of witnesses.

Defence solicitor Alison Mathias said Shaw wanted to apologise, especially as Mr Dalton was a family friend who had known him his whole life.

She said: “He is very remorseful and very embarrassed, not least as Mr Dalton is a long-term family friend. He feels extremely foolish about his behaviour.

“Unfortunately drink had got the better of him. This was very foolish behaviour triggered by alcohol and perhaps triggered by bravado in front of his old school friends. He has apologised for his actions.”

Ms Mathias said Shaw had paid for the broken window and had apologised personally to Mr Dalton.

She said Shaw, of 361 Cowbridge Road East in Cardiff, had been working abroad and returned home to Aberaeron to spend time with his family and friends.

Shaw was ordered to pay a fine of £400, but also pay compensation of £50 to the barmaid he threatened and costs of £111.
